Global One (G1)— Bangladesh has deployed heavily armed border guards in an islet near its southern borders with Myanmar — the first time in over 20 years.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) announced the troops were deployed to Saint Martin island on the Bay of Bengal on April 7 as part of “regular activities” to protect borders and fight drug smuggling.
The move comes after Dhaka made several protests against the alleged inclusion of the island within Myanmar’s territory in maps available in Myanmar. Last year, the island was also reportedly included in a Myanmar government department website.
Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told Anadolu Agency, “Either consciously or mistakenly, Myanmar has claimed the islands as their territory. So, it’s our normal duty to boost up security there.”
Relations between the two countries have been challenged in recent years following a massive military crackdown in Myanmar that drove away 700,000 Rohingyas to Bangladesh.
