GLOBAL ONE NEWS (G1) — Former Philippine officials have sued Chinese President Xi Jinping in the International Criminal Court.
Former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario and former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales urged the ICC to launch a preliminary investigation into Xi for the alleged “massive” environmental destruction his government caused to the South China Sea.
They also said they were writing on behalf of two fishermen allegedly “persecuted and injured” by Chinese officials.
The complaint was filed on March 15 — two days after the Philippines officially left the court for an ongoing investigation into alleged extrajudicial killings in President Rodrigo Duterte’s nationwide drug war.
Beijing has made at least seven artificial islands complete with military equipment in the highly contested region.
China is not part of the ICC raising doubts whether the case will ever prosper.
Duterte, meanwhile, said the case will not affect the renewed relationship between Manila and Beijing.
