GLOBAL ONE NEWS (G1) — China has said it plans to finish the construction of an “artificial sun” within this year.

Duan Xuru of the China National Nuclear Corporation said on March 10 the HL-2M Tokamak device is nearing completion after it was first announced November last year.

The device is designed to replicate the Sun’s nuclear fusion process to generate energy.

Duan told local media the ambitious project could achieve an electron temperature of over 100 million degrees Celsius — which is reportedly seven times higher than the temperature of the sun’s core.

That means there’s a possibility the “artificial sun” could provide unlimited clean energy in the future by harnessing nuclear fusion.

However, Duan said the artificial device has more to challenges to overcome — including boosting its ion temperature from 50 million to 100 million degrees Celsius before it generates energy.
