Global One (G1)— Former Philippine Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque has backed out from the May 2019 senate race.
Roque announced Feb. 1 he’s withdrawing his senatorial bid due to a heart condition. He said he has unstable angina coronary disease — a state in which the heart does not get enough blood and oxygen.
Roque said, “I have been forced to confront the reality of my physical situation and what it ultimately means for my aspirations to public service.”
He thanked his supporters and said he wanted to become a senator to serve the country “in a way” in which he will be “highly effective.”
According to CNN, Roque has formally informed the Commission on Elections and his party — Sara Duterte’s Hugpong ng Pagbabago — about his decision.
In October, Roque resigned as President Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesman to run as a party-list representative but later submitted his candidacy for senator — defying Duterte’s advice against it.
