GLOBAL ONE NEWS (G1) — Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is in Bangladesh for a three-day visit reportedly to “assess” the needs of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees there.

The 43-year-old actress arrived at the South Asian country on Monday, Feb. 4.

As the special envoy for U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Jolie is set to meet Bangladesh’s high officials to discuss financial aid for the refugees.

Reports said the United Nations seeks nearly $1 billion in funds to sustain the basic needs of the refugees.

The spokesperson of UNHCR reportedly said Jolie’s visit is aimed at addressing “the need for safe and sustainable solutions to the plight of one of the world’s most persecuted minorities.”

There are more than 730,000 Rohingya Muslims who escaped Buddhist-dominated Myanmar in 2017 following the military’s crackdown on insurgents that was described as “ethnic cleansing.”

Jolie has already made refugee camp visits in India and Myanmar as early as 2006.
