Global One (G1)— George Thorogood once sang, “One bourbon, one scotch, one beer.”
It’s not just a song — it’s also apparently a cold remedy.
A doctor from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee says whiskey can help ease the symptoms of cold and flu sufferers.
Dr. William Schaffner — the University’s chair of preventative medicine — told ABC News whiskey mixed into a hot beverage with lemon and honey could give some temporary relief.
He said, “The alcohol dilates blood vessels a little bit, and that makes it easier for your mucus membranes to deal with the infection.”
The heat also helps — think of a nice, soothing bowl of chicken soup.
It’s been a busy time for alcohol-related illness cures.
A Japanese study said an ingredient in beer can help fight viruses — but you would need to drink a lot to make it work.
Schaffner said, “We would not recommend going out and drinking 30 bottles of beer every day to ward off the flu. Better to get vaccinated.”
