GLOBAL ONE NEWS (G1) —Who says you can’t mix sports with politics?
Cricket star Mashrafe Mortaza most certainly has after capturing a lopsided win in the Bangladesh elections Dec. 30.
He’s currently a captain on the Bangladesh national team but will serve as a member of parliament after receiving a whopping 96% of the votes in his constituency.
He’s reportedly the first active Bangladeshi player to serve as an MP.
In an election condemned by the opposition for alleged voter fraud, intimidation and violence, Mortaza’s Awami League also won by a landslide — handing Sheikh Hasina a third term as prime minister.
Reportedly, cricketers turning to politics is not unusual in South Asia with many players commanding a devotion of millions of fans.
However, he’s reportedly expected to retire from the sport after the World Cup in 2019.
