GLOBAL ONE NEWS (G1) — Inside of Thai temples rests a literally big problem when it comes to Thailand’s Buddhist monks.
Recent reports reveal Thai monks have an obesity crisis.
The culprit behind the “ticking time bomb” is reportedly foods high in sugar and the modern lifestyle.
According to the Guardian, the obesity rate among monks escalated to 45% and nearly 7% of them have diabetes.
There’s also an alarming rate of heart disease and high cholesterol due to smoking and lack of exercise.
A health official said the bulging problem is “related to their unhealthy habits” and the majority don’t exercise.
Monks in Thailand are also offered foods such as sticky rice, cakes and desserts by Buddhist worshippers in a belief it brings them good karma.
Meanwhile, initiatives have been implemented by officials to fight the crisis.
Followers are now asked to offer healthier foods.
