Global One (G1)— U.S. President Donald Trump announced his support for a bipartisan criminal justice plan Nov. 14.

Entitled the “First Step Act,” the bill — developed in part by Trump advisor Jared Kushner — seeks to improve prisoner rehabilitation, lower prison terms and make it easier for former prisoners to get jobs.

Trump said, “Today, I am thrilled to announce my support for this bipartisan bill that will make our communities safer and give former inmates a second chance at life after they have served their time.”

Two of the bill’s supporters — one Democrat and one Republican — praised Trump’s move.

In a statement, they said, “President Trump’s endorsement of the bipartisan criminal justice reform compromise is an important step in our shared effort to promote safe communities and improve justice.”

A version of the bill passed in the House of Representatives earlier this year with bipartisan support.

The Senate version reportedly has a few changes, allowing it to have law enforcement support.
