GLOBAL ONE NEWS (G1)— One artist may have pulled the craziest prank of all time.

Just moments after being sold at auction for $1.4 million, Banksy’s Girl with Balloon painting self-destructed.

When the gavel struck at the Sotheby’s auction confirming the painting of the young girl reaching for a red, heart-shaped balloon was sold, a hidden shredder in the artwork’s frame began to slice it apart.

Banksy, the anonymous British artist posted footage of the shredding on his Instagram account, captioning it, “Going, going, gone…”

Apparently, the prankster built the shredder into the art years ago, planning to activate it if his painting ever went to auction— saying art should be “experienced” not simply owned.

Some speculate the painting may be fake or that others may have been involved in the stunt.

But nonetheless, Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s senior director in Europe said, “It appears we just got Banksy-ed.”

Though it seems the prank may have ruined the painting, experts believe it could now be worth almost twice as much.
