GLOBAL ONE NEWS (G1)—Hurricane Florence welcomed the people of North Carolina with 90-mph wind and relentless rain — leaving more than 100 residents waiting to be plucked from its storm surge overnight.

In the town of New Bern 150 people reportedly called for help and officials say they were “awaiting rescue.”

Residents were urged to seek shelter at the highest level of their houses.

Some escaped to their rooftops — others to their attics, like Peggy Perry who said, “In a matter of seconds, my house was flooded up to the waist, and now it is to the chest.”

Called by some “the storm of a lifetime” Hurricane Florence has already left more than 200,000 residents without power and could potentially impact 10 million.

The storm has prompted mass evacuations along the coastal Carolinas and officials warn not to be fooled by the downgrade to a category 1.

One weather official said, “I can’t emphasize enough the potential for unbelievable damage from wind, storm surge and inland flooding with this storm.”
