UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL — New research suggests a teenage girl is infected by HIV every three minutes.

In a press release on July 25, the U.N. Children’s Fund described the situation as a crisis and said it is being fueled by gender inequality.

According to a UNICEF report published this month, around 30 teenagers aged 15 to 19 were newly infected with HIV every hour last year, and two-thirds of them were girls.

Also,130,000 children and adolescents died last year from AIDS.

The data was unveiled this week at the 22nd International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam.

The head of UNICEF said, “HIV thrives among the most vulnerable and marginalized, leaving teenage girls at the center of the crisis.”

UNICEF is working with the UNAIDS group to help curb the spread of the virus.

British musician Elton John, however, told CNN society’s attitude toward the infection needs to change in order to end the epidemic.
