United News International (UNI)- The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in the Philippines signed an order on Friday, July 6 that allows jeepney drivers to increase their fares.

In a message to Business World, an LTFRB official said the increase was only provisional, and another fare hike can be expected in the future.

The increase comes as a result of higher fuel prices in metropolitan areas like Metro Manila, Central Luzon and Calabarzon.

The order will increase the fare for the first four kilometers of the trip, but there will not be an increase on any further kilometers.

The order will take effect immediately.

This is the first time fare hikes have been approved for jeepneys since February 2017.

Another raise in jeepney fares is expected as a result of a petition from five other transportation groups.
