UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — A Myanmar judge on Monday, July 9, charged two Reuters journalists with breaching the Official Secrets Act according to the news agency.

Reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were detained last year after investigating the killing of 10 Rohingyas in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state.

They are accused of illegally obtaining state secrets during their investigation.

The men’s defense lawyers said the lack of evidence should get the case thrown out.

However, Yangon district judge Ye Lwin believed there was enough to push the case toward trial.

The men pleaded not guilty to the charges on Monday.

They face up to 14 years in prison if convicted.

Reuters editor-in-chief Stephen J. Adler said the reporters were just doing their jobs and should be released.

Alder claims the case against the reporters is “baseless.”
