United News International (UNI)- The northern white rhino is the most endangered mammal in the world, and the last male rhino of the species died in March of this year.
But scientists say it may not be the end of the dying species thanks to what they call ‘’test tube rhinos.”
The concept is to use frozen white rhino sperm and eggs from southern white rhinos, which is a closely related sub-species, to create hybrid embryos.
The next step will be to extract the eggs from the last two surviving female northern white rhinos to create a purebred embryo.
Female southern white rhinos will act as surrogates for the embryos.
Scientists expect the first calf to be born in the next three years.
If successful, this will be a huge step towards developing methods to save other endangered species in the future.
