UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) β€” Macedonia struck a deal with Greece to change its name to the Republic of Northern Macedonia.

It’s a historic decision aimed at ending a 27-year dispute.

Within Greece, there is another region called Macedonia which has strong ties to Alexander the Great. It attracts a large number of tourists and Greeks argue only they have the right to use the name.

Macedonia was unable to join the European Union or NATO because of the long-running dispute. It has also been sitting in the United Nations as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

The two countries, however, have reached a compromise, which allows people from Macedonia to still be known as Macedonians.

Some natives, however, are still unhappy and protests were held in both countries on June 13.

The deal will have to be signed by both foreign ministers and ratified by their respective parliaments before it can go into effect.
