The Philippines wants new fighter jets from South Korea.

Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirmed on Thursday, June 7, that senior military officials discussed the subject during President Rodrigo Duterte’s visit to Seoul last week.

Lorenzana said Duterte wanted to buy a dozen more FA-50PH fighter jets for the Philippine Armed Forces.

The previous administration acquired 12 similar aircraft worth 18.9 billion from the Korean Aerospace Industries.

At the time, Duterte reportedly criticized the purchase as a “waste of money.”

Lorenzana said the president was impressed with how “effective” the jets were when they were used during the battle of Marawi last year.

The two countries also discussed cooperation in other military equipment such as helicopters and firearms. South Korea also reportedly offered to help the Philippines boost its military technology.
