UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — A green turtle, found on the eastern province of Chanthaburi in Thailand June 4, has died because of plastic waste.

Thailand is notorious for being one of the world’s largest consumers of plastic, which is blamed for killing hundreds of marine animals every year.

X-rays on the turtle showed plastic, rubber bands, pieces of balloons, and other items in the turtle’s intestinal tract caused it to be unable to eat.

The turtle died two days after being discovered despite the best efforts of the veterinarians.

The green turtle is a protected species on the endangered list, according to World Wildlife Fund.

Earlier this month, a pilot whale died in southern Thailand after swallowing 17 pounds of plastic waste.
