UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — “You’re off to see the Wizard…The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”
As a child, it was probably hard to get that phrase out of your head. Maybe it still is.
That iconic moment is memorable because of the characters who sing it: the Munchkins.
Jerry Maren, the last living Munchkin from the 1939 film, recently died at the age of 98.
Maren had reportedly been suffering from dementia, though his cause of death is unknown.
Maren was among the 124 actors who made up Munchkinland.
His character was part of the Lollipop Guild that welcomes Dorothy and her crew to their village.
He is famous for presenting Judy Garland’s character with a giant lollipop.
In an interview with The Independent in 2009, Maren said that the experience was “the greatest fun I ever had in my life.”
Maren received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on behalf of the Munchkins in 2007.
