Philippine senators on Monday, May 21, elected a new Senate president – Vicente Sotto III.

Sotto replaces Aquilino Pimentel III who resigned on the same day.

Sotto said he was “deeply humbled and sincerely grateful,” to lead the senate.

The election of Sotto didn’t come as a surprise.

Last week, the senate majority signed a resolution seeking reorganization.

Pimentel had supported Sotto, the  most senior senator, taking over the senate helm.

He said, “the peaceful and willing transfer of power in the senate” had been planned.

He said it had been an honor and privilege serving as Senate president, a position his father once held.

Sotto meanwhile, has been described as a staunch ally of President Rodrigo Duterte.
