UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL – Michigan State University has agreed to pay $500m to gymnasts who were abused by former doctor Larry Nassar.
A California law firm representing 332 victims announced the deal May 16.
Nassar served as a sports doctor at MSU for nearly 20 years and as a doctor for the USA Gymnastics Team through four Olympics.
Earlier this year, more than 100 women shared their stories in court of being sexually abused by Nassar and he was sentenced to life in prison.
But it isn’t just Nassar the women hold accountable. Many also say the university let them down by ignoring their complaints.
Olympic gold medalist Maggie Nichols told Time magazine if MSU had alerted USA Gymnastics, “I might never have met Larry Nassar and I would never have been abused by him.”
Following the settlement, the university apologized on its website for what Nassar’s victims went through.
