UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Following the U.S.’ lead, Guatemala has opened up a new embassy in Jerusalem.
Speaking about the embassy’s opening on May 16, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said that the move brings a message of “love, peace and fraternity” to Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Guatemala for the inauguration of its new embassy, and the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem were illuminated with Guatemalan flags in a show of thanks.
Wednesday’s opening of the new Guatemalan embassy came two days after the United States moved its own embassy to Jerusalem, sparking violent protests along the Israeli-Palestinian border.
The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem for their future capital and feel that the U.S. Embassy’s relocation from Tel Aviv invalidates the U.S. as a Mideast peace broker.
