UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — U.S. President Donald Trump was on hand Thursday to greet three American prisoners freed by North Korea.

The freed prisoners — Kim Dong-chul, Tony Kim and Kim Hak-song — landed at Joint Base Andrews outside of Washington, D.C. around 2:40 a.m. on May 10.

They were escorted back to the U.S. by newly-confirmed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Alongside first lady Melania Trump, the president greeted the former detainees on the plane.

Trump told reporters that it was “nice” of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to release the men, calling it “a special night for these three really great people.”

The former detainees were then taken to the Walter Reed Medical Center to be examined.

Their release marks a significant diplomatic milestone between the longtime adversaries and came ahead of a June 12 summit between Trump and Kim.
