UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Scientists say trash killed a sperm whale that washed ashore a couple of months ago on the southeast coast of Spain.
A necropsy revealed the whale, which was found Feb. 27 on a beach in Murcia, had swallowed more than 60 pounds of trash.
The garbage included everything from plastic bags and fishing nets to ropes and a plastic drum.
Officials said the whale was unable to digest the items, which then caused its digestive system to become inflamed.
Plastic continues be pose a major threat to marine life.
People produce around 300 million tons of plastic every year. Out of that, more than 8 million tons enter the ocean as trash.
The cause of death was announced by officials in Murcia as part of campaign to raise awareness about plastic pollution and trash in surrounding waters.
