UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — A baby whose parents died four years ago was born to a surrogate mother in China.
Shen Jie and Liu Xi were killed in a car crash in Nanjing in 2013.
The couple had planned on having a child and froze several embryos.
The couple’s four parents were eventually granted custody of the embryos after taking the issue to court.
Such a case was unprecedented in China.
After obtaining the embryos the grandparents looked for a surrogate to carry the baby.
Surrogacy is against the law in China, so they used a surrogate mother from Laos.
However, in December, the woman gave birth in China so the baby would have Chinese citizenship.
Hu Xingxian, the boy’s maternal grandmother, named him Tiantian, which translates to sweet sweet.
She told the Beijing News, “His eyes look like my daughter’s, but he looks more like his father.”
