UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Using a hand dryer is typically considered an efficient alternative to paper towels, but a new study suggests that may be far from the truth.
The study, published recently in Applied and Environmental Biology, found that hand dryers suck up and spray out far more bacteria than is usually in bathroom air.
Special plates left under dryers in both men’s and women’s bathrooms were compared to plates left in the same bathrooms away from the dryer.
After 30 seconds, the plates under the hand dryers showed 18 to 60 colonies of bacteria. Regular bathroom air left one colony on average after two minutes.
A study author told Business Insider, “The more air ya move? The more bacteria stick.”
Now, if you think about what kind of bacteria is floating around the bathroom, you may want to stick with paper towels.
