UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — U.S. President Donald Trump has removed Rex Tillerson as secretary of state and nominated CIA Director Mike Pompeo as his replacement.
Tillerson, the former CEO of ExxonMobil, has held the post of top diplomat since February 2017.
The Washington Post reports Tillerson was asked to step down on Friday, March 9, but Trump announced the personnel shakeup on Tuesday via Twitter.
Undersecretary of State Steve Goldstein said Tillerson did not speak to Trump and is unaware of the reason for his dismissal.
Trump said to reporters on Tuesday he and Tillerson disagreed on some things, like the Iran nuclear deal, which Trump wants to scrap.
He said Pompeo is more in line with his views.
Trump also said CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel would replace Pompeo, making her the first female CIA chief.
Pompeo and Haspel must be approved by the Senate before taking their new posts.
