UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Tennis legend Serena Williams won her first singles match since giving birth.

Williams beat Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas, 7-5, 6-3, in the first round at the BNP Paribas Open near Palm Springs, California. It’s Williams’ first WTA tournament since giving birth to Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. just six months ago.

And the 23-time Grand Slam champ told reporters she almost cried before the match because she missed her daughter so much.  She said, “Playing at night really helped because I know she goes to bed and she’s goes to sleep. And I know, if she’s asleep, I can’t play with her right now.”

Williams’ next “play date” is with Dutch player Kiki Bertens March 10 in the second round.

Bertens, who’s 10 years younger than Williams, is ranked 29th in the world. But Williams says she’s got nothing to lose, and it’s a joy to be back out there playing the game she loves.
