UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — The U.S. Justice Department has launched a new task force to probe alleged drug-trafficking and money-laundering schemes tied to Hezbollah following a report that the Obama administration turned a blind eye to avoid derailing the Iran nuclear deal.

On Jan. 11, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that a dedicated team of prosecutors and investigators will “begin by assessing the evidence in existing investigations” into the Lebanon-based group’s narcotics and weapons trafficking.

The move follows a report by Politico last month that claimed that the Obama administration hindered DEA investigations targeting Hezbollah’s trafficking operations during its negotiation of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Republicans have seized on the Politico report, arguing that the Obama administration gave away too much to Iran in order to reach the nuclear agreement.
